Two sisters, the evil Corva and the less evil Nima, battle over the land of Tag-Mur and the legendary swords known to legend as “The Eyes of the Serpent.” It’s pretty easy to tell who is on what side in this movie, as all the evil people wear black leather and all the good people wear buckskin. Corva and Nima have two daughters, Raven and Fiona, respectively, who are also vying for their place in Tag-Mur. They also wear their respective black leather or buckskin. As far as sword and sorcery epics go, this one is short on special effects and mayhem, but it makes up for some of that with a couple of twists, moderately successful attempts at humor, and a less than standard story line. Actor Tom Schultz has quite a bit of fun with the gallant role of Galen. –Keith Simanton

Cedric the Entertainer transforms Jackie Gleason’s classic blu-collar sitcom The Honeymooners into an urban comedy. New York City bus driver Ralph Kramden (Cedric, Barbershop) lives in volatile bliss with his wife Alice (Gabrielle Union, Bring It On). His best friend Ed Norton (Mike Epps, Next Friday) and his wife Trixie (Regina Hall, Scary Movie) live upstairs in a cramped, dingy apartment building. Ralph and Ed get into constant trouble du to their brainless get-rich-quick schemes, including buying a Pullman train car and trying to race an abandoned greyhound–schemes which only serve to lose the money they need to buy a charming duplex on a tree-lined street. Unfortunately, there’s a sleazy real-estate agent (Eric Stoltz, Pulp Fiction) who’s wooing the little old lady who owns the property, so it’s a race to see if Ralph and Ed can raise the money before the bill of sale gets signed. It’s a shame that so many cliches had to die so that their hollow, lifeless corpses could be put on display in this formulaic excuse for a movie. Also featuring John Leguizamo (Moulin Rouge), who rattles off a string of one-liners that almost become funny through sheer velocity. –Bret Fetzer

The fun-loving Feynman and his young bride Arlene, played by Patricia Arqutte (Tru Romance) enjoy their courtship and young married life in New York until Feynman is called away to New Mexico to participate in the Manhattan Project and the development of the hydrogen bomb. Their storybook romance is further complicated when Arlene discovers she is seriously ill, and Feynman must confront not only the morality of his participation in the development of the bomb but the nature of life and death and the love he has for his wife. A nice, small sweet romance that aims low but scores high, Infinity is a quirky but poignant love story and a fine directorial debut. –Robert Lane

Two years after leaving the grungy cyberpunk calling card Tetsuo: The Iron Man, Shinya Tsukamoto reenters the world of flesh and metal metamorphoses with a more narratively ambitious film that is neither sequl nor remake, but a rethinking of the ideas on a bigger scale with more impressive effects. The film begins in the recognizable world of the thriller, where a young middle-class couples see their son kidnapped by mysterious hoodlums, and then takes an abrupt turn into an underworld of cybermen led by a mad scientist performing twisted experiments. The father (Tomoroh Taguchi, returning from the first film), filled with rage and shame at his powerlessness, suddenly transforms into a robotic warrior and becomes overwhelmed by the power, simultaneously terrified and ecstatic. Unlike in the original, Tsukamoto offers an explanation, for what it’s worth, but the power lies not in the story but the nightmarish imagery and the themes of the marriage of flesh and technology, metal and magic. With an ample budget at his disposal (not to mention color), Tsukamoto ups the conflict to a battle of biblical proportions while maintaining the brooding, terrifying, nightmarish quality. Tsukamoto’s gory, violent vision of technology run amok is not for everyone, but fans of David Lynch and David Cronenberg will find his dangerous visions just as creatively disturbing. –Sean Axmaker
